As Americans, we love our huge bathrooms. The bigger, the better. One of the things James and I looked for when searching for villas was a huge and luxurious master bathroom. We just knew one of the big beautiful villas would have big beautiful bathrooms. We searched high and low...literally...for nice bathrooms. All of them were small and some of them were plain and small.
When I found this villa, I thought it would at least have a large master bath. Don't get me wrong, the bathrooms are nicely tiled. But they have a horrible layout. One of them has the toilet so close to the sink that your knees literally are underneath the sink when you're sitting on the toilet. (Fortunately, it's not one that's used often.) My friends say it's perfect for someone with a hangover.
James and I had been asking around about the bathroom situation. But everyone we asked felt just like us. Eventually, I discovered that we had been asking the wrong people.
One night while visiting our Jordanian friends, Muhammad was discussing the Islamic religion. Somewhere during the conversation, he mentioned that Shaitan lives in the bathroom. James laughed because we weren't sure what a Shaitan was. Then, Nadia looked at me and said, "Shaitan...umm...Shaitan." She was trying to get me to give her the English equivalent of Shaitan. I thought a minute and said, "Satan?" I get an enthusiastic, "yes, yes." from Nadia. Now James is really laughing because Muhammad told us that he smokes in the bathroom because Shaitan lives there and cigarettes are Shatain's too. I'm looking at Muhammad's facial expression and there is no smile on his face. He's very serious.
Suddenly, I realize what he's saying to us. I tell James to hold on because I think Muhammad is serious. I asked Muhammad, "Did you say that Shaitan lives in the bathroom?" He emphatically told me, "yes because it is a dirty place. It is where Shaitan lives." James and I were both flabbergasted. We asked if the bathrooms were small because they don't want Shaitan to take up too much space in the home. The answer...you got it. Yes.
This leads me to a couple of questions:
1. Is the housekeeper not a child of Allah? Because the housekeeper is the one that has to clean up all the crap in the bathrooms.
2. Why on earth are there 6 bathrooms? One would think having more bathrooms, allows Shaitan to hop all over the house and occupy more space.
Just wondering.

1) Perhaps the housekeepers have a "cleansing ritual" for themselves, before and after cleaning?
ReplyDelete2) The average Villa can hold how many people? Because my thinking is you want to expel any "Satan-like" occurrences as quickly as possible, so the bathroom, while "a house of Satan", still needs to be readily available?
This is interesting stuff for this anthro major!
